Preventing Boiler Breakdowns
Arranging a boiler service once a year not only ensures that your boiler remains safe, it also helps to reduce the number of faults you’ll experience. Do I need a new boiler?
If your boiler is over 10 years old and you are experiencing regular breakdowns, it may be time to replace your boiler. Older boilers are more likely to experience faults, and they may not be running as efficiently as they once did.

Can I fix my boiler myself?
If you’re not qualified to install, maintain or repair boilers it’s dangerous to attempt the work yourself. However you may find that resetting the boiler helps to solve any glitches. Here are some of the boiler fault codes you may come across.

- Thermostat issues
Check that your thermostat is switched on, set to heating, and turned higher than your current room temperature. If it’s battery powered, replace the batteries and try again. Smart thermostats may also need reconnecting to Wi-Fi or their hub. - Boiler may need resetting
Many boilers lock out when they detect a fault. Look for a reset button on the front panel or under the casing (refer to your user manual). Press and hold for 3-5 seconds and wait to see if the boiler fires back up. - Pilot light has gone out
Older boilers use a pilot flame. If it’s gone out, follow your manufacturer’s instructions to relight it. If the flame won’t stay lit, this may indicate a faulty thermocouple or gas supply issue. - Pressure too low
Check the pressure gauge on the front of your boiler. It should usually sit around 1-1.5 bar. If lower, carefully top it up using the filling loop. Open both valves slowly and close once the gauge is at the correct level. - Time to call an engineer
If the heating still isn’t working after these checks, or you smell gas, hear unusual noises, or see error codes you don’t understand, contact our Gas Safe registered engineers for a safe diagnosis and repair.
Legally, you cannot replace a gas boiler yourself unless you are Gas Safe registered. UK law requires any installation, disconnection or modification of a gas appliance to be carried out by a qualified Gas Safe engineer to ensure the system is safe and compliant. Trying to install a boiler without the correct certification can lead to serious issues, including prosecution and a failed home gas inspection.
DIY boiler installation is also extremely risky. Incorrect installation can cause gas leaks, carbon monoxide poisoning, electrical faults, system damage or even fire. Beyond the safety concerns, fitting a boiler yourself may also void the manufacturer’s warranty, leaving you unprotected if the boiler develops a fault later.

A Gas Safe engineer can also properly size the boiler, check ventilation, install flues safely, and test the system, giving you peace of mind and full documentation for insurance and warranty purposes.
